Community

OmaROSS is a four-day Summer Kickoff event; this event was brought to life through our partnerships with Youth for Greater Good, So Elite Basketball Training, GMoneyiam Visions, and Visions2Reality. We kicked off the summer with a NCAA Athlete Panel, Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo field trip, Round Table Talks Series, So Elite All-Academic Camp, and a Culture Night.

“OmaROSS was more than a kickoff event, it was an opportunity for South Sudanese people from across the country to connect with one another through culture. Every room you walked into was filled with future doctors, lawyers, artists, photographers, business owners, and more.” - Nyankoor Timothy

Community

We understand that without the support from the community and our students’ families, our work would not be possible. We hosted large community events in 2021, one to kick off our summer programming and another to end the season with a bang. Our June BBQ in Lincoln was an opportunity for our youth, their families, and other community leaders to learn more about our story and our goals, and to meet the leaders who are the backbone of our organization. Our August BBQ was an opportunity for the community to gather to hear about the impactful summer program we hosted. Connecting through shared meals is a very vital part of South Sudanese culture, and through our community gatherings here at ROSS Leaders, we aim to keep that tradition alive. Without the celebration of community, we would not be able to continue growing and expanding our network.

Drives

ROSS Leaders recognizes that in order to see our students become the best versions of themselves, they need tools at their disposal to do just that. A number of families within our community are unable to provide their students with the various supplies they need to succeed academically. As an organization, we have hosted back to school backpack drives where volunteers handed out backpacks and supplies to children and families in the community. The backpacks came filled with pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, and other school supplies to ensure the success of our students as we sent them off to begin the new academic year.  At our 2019 backpack drive, more than 350 backpacks were donated to families in need.
